Everybody knows the importance of sustainability—from climate change to plastic pollution to the growing gap between rich and poor, and the weakening of democracy. But most discussion about sustainability (if not greenwashing) is wordy and academic. It can be intolerant, scary, and disempowering. During my studies I read terrific, enlightening books and papers on topics related to sustainability. But I wondered how a busy parent minding little kids would have time to read such long articles. How would they have time to make sense of all the jargon? How would they experience hope for their children’s future? I’m a mum, so busyness and concern for our kids are things I understand well.
When I worked as a technical writer, I took complex high-tech information written by experts and communicated it in a way that was easier to understand. Now I'm doing the same with sustainability concepts. If you subscribe to Solarpunk Thinking, you will see posts from me that explore sustainability simply and clearly, and in a way designed to grow hope for a positive future.
What's a solarpunk?
Solarpunk is a kind of science fiction where the future is positive and the main energy source is from the sun. It’s punk because it shows a transformed future society that has rejected today’s unsustainable ways. Solarpunk society is diverse and inclusive of everyone, so I trust that however you see yourself you will find a safe place as a solarpunk here in Solarpunk Thinking. I’ve always seen myself as punk rock even though I don’t look it. I feel “real” comfortable in this space already!
